Blazing Paddles is a team that competes in dragon boat and canoe races. Our members participate in many other sports, too. We are based in Broward County, Florida, USA. We practice paddling several times each week, and offer additional conditioning opportunities.
We also support our community. In addition to ongoing waterway clean up efforts, we offer dragon boat experiences to benefit such charitable endeavors as the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theatre (www.FLCT.org), Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Broward County, and Deliver the Dream.
Our team has enjoyed its share of success. Notable finishes include first place in our division in 2002, 2003 and 2004 in Fort Lauderdale/Broward County’s dragon boat races, including first overall over men’s teams (our team is mixed gender) in 2003; Chunda Vallam Festival Champion two consecutive years, Coed Division Champion in the Wilton Manors Canoe Race for ten (10) consecutive years, including this year and the we are the IDBF Community Division World Champions.
But don’t be intimidated by any of that. We welcome beginners. Our only prerequisite is a good attitude. Our team has a pirate theme and you will often see us at races in tricorns and with eye patches and other buccaneer accoutrements. Team members enjoy social outings together, and the team encourages participation in outdoor activities and sports like adventure racing. Being part of the team let’s us be the best we can be individually and to accomplish great things together.
